Steam actually gives you three different identifiers, not one. Your login username is used to sign in. Your Steam profile name is the public name other people see. Steam’s Three Identifiers Explained

Login Username

Your login username is used to sign in to your Steam account. It is different from your public profile name. Making it blank would not be useful because it is not your public display name.

Persona Name

Your Persona Name is the public name shown on your Steam profile. Steam also says that users can change the profile name shown to others.

Custom URL

A Custom URL is separate from your public profile name. It is used as part of your Steam profile link. It should not be treated as the same thing as your Persona Name.

Why Your Blank Name Might Look Different on Steam Deck

Steam runs on different operating systems and devices. These include Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.
