Invisible Character for Steam | Blank Name and Chat Guide

Steam actually gives you three different identifiers, not one. Your login username is used to sign in. Your Steam profile name is the public name other people see. Your Custom URL is a separate profile link. This page covers where a blank character may be useful. The same characters are also available on the main invisible character copy page if you need them for something else.

Best Invisible Character for Steam

Hangul Filler and Braille Pattern Blank are commonly used invisible characters. However, Steam does not officially document which invisible characters work in every field. Their behavior can also vary between fields and clients.

U+3164 — Hangul Filler

A commonly used invisible Unicode character.

U+2800 — Braille Pattern Blank

Another commonly used invisible Unicode character.

Steam’s Three Identifiers Explained

Login Username

Your login username is used to sign in to your Steam account. It is different from your public profile name. Making it blank would not be useful because it is not your public display name.

Persona Name

Your Persona Name is the public name shown on your Steam profile. Steam also says that users can change the profile name shown to others.

Custom URL

A Custom URL is separate from your public profile name. It is used as part of your Steam profile link. It should not be treated as the same thing as your Persona Name.

Why Your Blank Name Might Look Different on Steam Deck

Steam runs on different operating systems and devices. These include Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.

Because of this, the same character may look different on different devices. You may see a blank space on one device and a box or another symbol on another device.

This does not always mean the character failed to save. It can simply be a difference in how the device displays the character.

How to Set an Invisible Steam Persona Name

  1. Open your Steam profile and select Edit Profile.
  2. Clear the Persona Name field.
  3. Paste the copied character and save your changes.

Steam allows users to change the profile name shown to others.

How to Write a Blank-Titled Steam Review

Steam lets users post reviews for games they own. Reviews have their own fields for the review content.

  1. Go to the store page of the game and select Write a Review.
  2. If the review title field accepts the copied character, paste it there.
  3. Write your review text as normal and post it.

The exact behavior of invisible characters in Steam Reviews is not officially documented, so a blank title is not guaranteed to work.

Which Invisible Characters Work on Steam

Steam does not provide an official compatibility table for invisible Unicode characters. The table below should therefore be treated as a testing guide, not a guaranteed result.

Steam may handle invisible characters differently in different fields. A character that works in one place may not work in another.

Steam’s Custom URL is also separate from your Persona Name. Do not assume that an invisible character that works in a profile field will also work in a Custom URL.

Common Steam Invisible Character Problems

Your name shows a box on Steam Deck but looks fine on your PC

This can be a font or display difference between devices. The character may still be saved even if it looks different on one device.

You cannot change your group name

Steam Groups have different roles and permissions. If you do not see the option to edit a group, you may not have the required permissions. Steam’s Community system includes group officers and moderators.

Your chat message looks different in the overlay than in the desktop app

Steam can display the same text differently across its clients and interfaces. If an invisible character looks different, check it in the Steam client and the interface where you plan to use it.

Your Review title will not accept the character

Steam does not officially document which invisible Unicode characters are accepted in Review titles. If one character does not work, you can test another character or use a normal visible title.

You copied a Persona Name from a friend’s profile and it will not match

A copied name may contain more than one hidden character. A character scanning tool can show you what is inside the copied text before you try to use it again.

Steam Invisible Character FAQ

Can I get VAC banned for using an invisible Persona Name?

There is no reason to treat a normal Unicode character in a display name as a VAC cheat. VAC is related to Valve Anti-Cheat and cheating in games, not simply to the text used in a profile name.

Does changing my Persona Name cost anything?

Steam allows users to change the profile name shown to others. Steam’s support information does not describe a paid fee for changing this display name.

Does an invisible name affect my Steam Level or badges?

Your Steam profile name is separate from your Steam Level and badges. Changing the name you display does not change those account features.

Can I use an invisible character in a Steam Workshop item title?

Steam does not officially document whether specific invisible Unicode characters are accepted in every Workshop title field. Results may vary, so do not treat any character as guaranteed to work there.

Will my Custom URL ever accept an invisible character?

A Custom URL has its own rules and is separate from your Persona Name. Steam does not provide an official compatibility list for invisible Unicode characters in Custom URLs, so an invisible character should not be treated as guaranteed to work there.
